How do you delete a Facebook account?

How do you delete a Facebook account?

Facebook has been a part of our lives for years. But sometimes, it feels good to take a break. Or cut ties completely. Wondering how to delete your Facebook account? No worries! We’ve got your back. Just follow these small steps, and you’ll be free in no time.

Before we dive in… let’s make one thing clear:

Deleting your Facebook account is not the same as deactivating it.

  • Deactivate: Your account goes into sleep mode. You can come back anytime.
  • Delete: Say goodbye forever. All your data is wiped away.

Now, if you’re ready for the big leap, let’s jump in!

Step 1: Think Before You Delete

Do you really want to delete it? It’s permanent. That means:

  • No more messages.
  • No more photos or videos.
  • No more birthday wishes from random people you met at camp in 2009.

If you’re super sure, let’s move on.

Step 2: Save Your Stuff

Want to keep those cute puppy pics or your high school selfies? Good thinking! Facebook lets you download a copy of your data.

Here’s how:

  1. Open Facebook and click the drop-down arrow at the top right.
  2. Select Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  3. Click on Your Facebook Information.
  4. Select Download your information.
  5. Choose what you want to save (photos, posts, comments, etc.).
  6. Click Create File. Facebook will email you when it’s ready.

Now that you’ve saved your memories, it’s time for the main act!

Step 3: Go to the Delete Page

Facebook doesn’t make this super obvious, but with our help, you’ll get there easily.

Go to this link: Delete My Account.

You can also get there manually:

  1. Click the drop-down arrow at the top right of your Facebook page.
  2. Select Settings & Privacy, then Settings.
  3. Click Your Facebook Information.
  4. Look for Deactivation and Deletion.
  5. Choose Delete Account and click Continue.

Almost there!

Step 4: Confirm and Say Goodbye

After clicking delete, Facebook will ask you to:

  • Enter your password.
  • Click that final “Delete Account” button.

Done! 🎉

Wait, not quite.

Step 5: The 30-Day Window

Facebook gives you 30 days to change your mind. During this time, your account is deactivated. Not deleted.

If you log in during those 30 days and click Cancel Deletion, poof! Your account returns like it never left.

After 30 days, though… it’s gone for good.

Bonus: What About Messenger?

Deleting Facebook also deletes your Messenger. So if you’re still chatting with your buddy Greg on Messenger, the conversation ends here.

Thinking Twice? Try These Instead

Not ready to let go?

  • Deactivate your account. You can come back later.
  • Delete the app from your phone. Out of sight, out of mind.
  • Unfollow people. A cleaner feed can make Facebook nicer.

That’s It!

Deleting Facebook can feel like a big step. But sometimes, cutting the cord is just what you need. Whether it’s for mental health, focus, or just peace — we support you!

So wave goodbye to endless birthday notifications and friend requests from people you barely know. Embrace the freedom!

Happy unplugging!
