Use the delivery platform as your starting point: choose the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, codec, color settings, and export format that match where the video will be watched. A file for YouTube is not the same as a file for broadcast, archiving, TikTok, or a client review. Good video settings protect detail, motion, color, and audio without creating huge files for no reason.
TLDR: For most online videos, export in MP4, H.264, 1080p or 4K, 24–30 fps, Rec.709 color, and a sensible bitrate. For example, a 10-minute 1080p video at 12 Mbps will be around 900 MB before platform compression, while the same video at 40 Mbps may look only slightly better online but triple the upload time. If you edit in 4K but publish to social media, exporting a clean 1080p version can save time and still look sharp. Use higher bitrates and better codecs only when the audience or project truly needs them.
1. Resolution: Pick Detail That Matches the Job
Resolution is the pixel size of your video. Higher resolution can show more detail, but it also increases file size, render time, and hardware demand.
- 720p: 1280 × 720. Acceptable for basic web previews or low-bandwidth delivery.
- 1080p: 1920 × 1080. The safest standard for most online videos.
- 1440p: 2560 × 1440. Useful for sharper gaming, tutorials, and screen recordings.
- 4K UHD: 3840 × 2160. Best for premium content, cropping flexibility, and large screens.
- DCI 4K: 4096 × 2160. Common in cinema workflows, less common for web delivery.
Do not upscale low-quality footage and expect miracles. A 1080p clip exported as 4K may pass platform checks, but it will not gain real detail. The catch is that some platforms compress 4K uploads less harshly, so a 4K export can help even when the source is mixed. Test this before making it your standard.
2. Frame Rate: Control Motion and Feel
Frame rate is the number of images shown per second. It changes how motion feels. It also affects exposure choices, motion blur, file size, and compatibility.
- 24 fps: Film-style motion. Good for narrative, interviews, and cinematic edits.
- 25 fps: Common in PAL regions and European broadcast workflows.
- 30 fps: Clean standard for YouTube, corporate videos, tutorials, and social content.
- 50 or 60 fps: Smooth motion for sports, gaming, action, and screen capture.
- 120 fps and above: Used for slow motion, not usually final delivery.
The best rule is simple: export at the same frame rate you edited in. Mixed frame rates can cause judder. If you shot at 23.976 fps, export at 23.976 fps, not exactly 24, unless the delivery spec asks for it. It drives me crazy that some apps hide this setting under “advanced,” where it adds 20 seconds of checking to every export.
3. Bitrate: The Quality and File Size Tradeoff
Bitrate controls how much data is used per second of video. More data can mean cleaner detail, fewer blocky artifacts, and smoother gradients. Too little data causes mushy textures, banding, and ugly motion.
Use these as practical starting points for H.264 MP4 web exports:
- 1080p at 24–30 fps: 8–12 Mbps
- 1080p at 60 fps: 12–20 Mbps
- 1440p at 30 fps: 16–24 Mbps
- 4K at 24–30 fps: 35–55 Mbps
- 4K at 60 fps: 55–85 Mbps
For final client masters, raise the bitrate. For quick approvals, lower it. For archive copies, use a mezzanine codec instead of just cranking H.264 to a huge number.
CBR means constant bitrate. It is predictable and useful for streaming specs. VBR means variable bitrate. It gives more data to complex scenes and less to simple ones. For most exports, use VBR 2 pass when you have time. Use VBR 1 pass when speed matters.
4. Codecs and Containers: Do Not Confuse Them
A codec compresses the video. A container holds the video, audio, subtitles, and metadata. For example, H.264 is a codec, while MP4 is a container.
- H.264: Best general choice. Strong compatibility, good quality, reasonable file size.
- H.265 or HEVC: Better compression than H.264, but slower and less universal.
- AV1: Very efficient for web streaming, but encoding can be slow.
- ProRes: Excellent for editing, masters, and handoff. Large files.
- DNxHD or DNxHR: Strong professional editing codecs, common in post-production.
For public upload, choose MP4 with H.264 unless you have a clear reason not to. For a high-quality master, choose ProRes 422 HQ, ProRes 4444, or DNxHR HQX, depending on the workflow. For transparent graphics with alpha, use ProRes 4444 or another format that supports transparency.
5. Color Settings: Keep Color Predictable
Color problems often come from mismatched settings, not bad cameras. The most common standard for web video is Rec.709. If your project is SDR, export Rec.709 unless the job asks for HDR.
- Rec.709: Standard SDR for web, YouTube, corporate video, and broadcast-style delivery.
- sRGB: Similar to Rec.709 for many screen uses, but not identical in every workflow.
- HDR10: Used for high brightness range delivery on supported screens.
- Log footage: Must be converted or graded before standard export.
Watch your gamma, color space, and legal versus full range settings. A wrong full-range export can make blacks look crushed or gray after upload. A wrong HDR-to-SDR conversion can make skin tones look strange. Check the video on more than one screen before delivery.
6. Audio Settings Matter Too
Bad audio makes good video feel cheap. For most web exports, use AAC audio inside an MP4 file.
- Sample rate: 48 kHz
- Bit depth while editing: 24 bit if available
- Export bitrate: 192–320 kbps for stereo AAC
- Loudness target: around -14 LUFS for many online platforms
- Peak level: keep true peaks below -1 dBTP
Do not export final video with 128 kbps audio unless the file must be tiny. Dialogue gets brittle fast, and music loses depth.

- YouTube 1080p: MP4, H.264, 1920 × 1080, 24–30 fps, VBR 2 pass, 10–16 Mbps, AAC 320 kbps.
- YouTube 4K: MP4, H.264 or H.265, 3840 × 2160, VBR 2 pass, 45–70 Mbps, AAC 320 kbps.
- Instagram or TikTok: MP4, H.264, 1080 × 1920, 30 fps, 8–15 Mbps, AAC 256 kbps.
- Client review: MP4, H.264, 1080p, 6–10 Mbps, burned-in timecode if needed.
- Archive master: ProRes 422 HQ or DNxHR HQX, original resolution, original frame rate, uncompressed or high-quality PCM audio.
8. Final Checks Before Delivery
Before you send or upload the file, run a short quality check. Watch the first minute, the last minute, and any section with fast motion, text, gradients, or dark scenes. Check spelling in titles. Confirm the frame rate. Confirm the audio sync.
Also inspect the file size. If a two-minute 1080p review file is 5 GB, something is wrong for that purpose. If a 30-minute training video is 120 MB, it is probably overcompressed. Serious delivery is not about using the highest settings every time. It is about matching settings to the job, then checking the result like a professional.
